Today marks the start of Women in Construction (WIC) Week, a week our industry has designated to appreciate, inspire, and congratulate all of the dedicated women thriving in a traditionally male-dominated field. As active supporters of this mission, Total-Western would like to take a moment to recognize some of the strong women of our company who are making a difference in the construction sector. First up, we have Payroll Lead, Dominique Simmons!

How long have you been working in the construction industry?

I’ve been working in the construction industry for 5 ½ years. I started at Spectra in September 2018, transitioned to Bragg in May 2022, and then joined Total-Western last April.

What made you interested in joining?

While working at Spectra as a Data Entry Clerk, I had the opportunity to see how integral employee engagement was. I noticed that all levels of employees regularly worked together to ensure the success of a project, unlike other hierarchical industries. That was something I had not experienced before and was eager to be a part of.

What’s your “why” – why do you love working for Total-Western?

I love working for Total-Western because of its collaborative and friendly work environment. Employees are encouraged to make suggestions, provide feedback, and raise concerns. We receive regular updates on company changes, monthly opportunities to participate in team building events, and even have an employee recognition/reward system that gives immediate acknowledgement of our efforts.

Lastly, this year’s theme is Keys to the Future, which celebrates the strength and knowledge of women and the vital role they play in shaping the future of the construction industry. What does this theme mean to you?

This theme really resonates with me because in other spaces, my value was not always clear. Here, I feel valued, supported, and that my opportunities are limitless!
