Allow us to introduce our second intern: Sean Garis!
Sean is a Senior at Oregon State University majoring in Structural & Architectural Engineering.
Where are you from?
I grew up in San Dimas, California and lived there until after I graduated high school. Now I live in Littleton, Colorado.
How did you decide on your university for school?
Oregon has a great architectural engineering program with varied paths, and, beyond that, the university has always had a good atmosphere and vibe.
How did you decide on your major? Why are you interested in pursuing a career in construction?
I thought that designing structural systems would be interesting and, as someone who enjoys math, I thought I would be good at it. So far it has been fun and interesting, and moving into my last year I haven’t had to retake any classes, so I think I chose a good path for me!
What initially interested you about the Total-Western Internship Program?
I wanted my first internship to give me context for some of the work that gets done in the construction industry. Even if I don’t end up becoming a PE in construction, I figured the experience would certainly be valuable.
How’s it going so far?
It’s been a bit more daunting than I thought it’d be…we have to complete a summer project that requires a lot of work and it feels like there’s limited time to complete deliverables. I am looking forward to getting out on a few more job walks in the coming weeks; that’s an experience Total-Western offers that I wouldn’t have access to otherwise.
What are you enjoying most?
The comradery between the interns. It’s the exact experience I wanted to get from this internship and my peer-to-peer relationships.
What job site are you currently at?
Oxnard
What do you hope to gain by the time your internship concludes?
I want to get more context for some of the processes and sequences within the construction industry; being able to observe projects in action will allow me to learn things that I wouldn’t be able to in the classroom.
