Inesh is a Senior at San Jose State University majoring in Mechanical Engineering.

Where are you from?

I was born in Kathmandu, Nepal, however I grew up in Fremont, California.

How did you decide on your university for school?

I wanted to go to a university that had a good engineering program that focuses on automobiles. I also wanted to stay close to home so I could assist with my family’s business. Two of my dream companies – Tesla and Lam Research – are also located in the Bay area and have a lot of employees who are SJSU alums, so SJSU seemed like the perfect fit.

How did you decide on your major? Why are you interested in pursuing a career in construction?

I always had a passion for cars and wondered how they worked. Mechanical Engineering is something I can see myself doing on a day-to-day basis and it’s a broad enough field where I can go into it and see what parts I truly enjoy.

What initially interested you about the Total-Western Internship Program?

I wanted an opportunity to see more of the business side of engineering as well as the process before a bid is won and what that looks like in regards to the engineering component.

How’s it going so far?

I love it. The first two weeks were a bit rough because it was a lot of new content to learn. However, after learning what to ask and who to ask for help, things have gotten a lot easier. I’m also starting to get a hang of the weekly work schedule and building a deeper bond with my fellow interns and coworkers, which has been really rewarding.

What are you enjoying most?

So far, I am enjoying the whole experience overall. I enjoy reading engineering documents and being able to add input to current projects, as well as going on job walks and experiencing a day-in-the-life of an everyday engineer (i.e. talking to employees, working in teams, joining in and contributing to meetings, etc.)

What job site are you currently at?

I’ve been assigned to our sites at Honey Well, Beta, and Santa Paula.

What do you hope to gain by the time your internship concludes?

I came into this internship not knowing anything about project engineering, and I hope to leave this internship with the knowledge of how to schedule and estimate. Other than the engineering side, I also hope to learn how to be a good coworker in regards to collaborating, emailing, and scheduling meetings with each other.
